Congratulations to our Convenor Puja Kapai on being awarded the Faculty of Law’s Knowledge Exchange (KE) Awards 2017 for her project entitled ‘Plugging the Justice Gap for Minorities under the Law: Applied Intersectionality Research and Substantive Equality’!

The “justice gap” framing really lands — it’s not just about having rights on paper, it’s whether people can actually access them when their identities overlap in ways the system doesn’t anticipate. I’m also thinking about how a lot of equity work ends up being practical “navigation” help, almost like translating between worlds; funny enough I was recently fiddling with wardrobe planning on StyleLookLab and the same idea applies: the framework matters, but it has to be usable day to day. Would be interested to see follow-up on what changed after the project (training, procedures, partnerships), not just the award announcement.
Congrats to Puja Kapai — applied intersectionality and substantive equality are the kind of frameworks that actually show where policy and procedure miss people in practice. On a totally random tangent, the idea of “bridging gaps” always reminds me how translation is never purely mechanical — even silly tools like a quick ghibli ai generator show how much context and interpretation matter. Would love to know whether the project produced any concrete guidance for frontline legal services (intake questions, outreach, language support, etc.).
Nice to see KE awards recognizing work that’s practical, not just theoretical — “plugging the justice gap” for minorities is exactly where the law often fails in everyday life. It also made me think about how communication barriers show up in unexpected places (even down to basic digital literacy) — I once had to sanity-check some data with a handy online binary translator and realized how opaque systems can feel to non-experts. Curious what kinds of community partners were involved in the project, and how they measured real-world impact.
